Apple Varieties

Picked with Care

Although picking your own fruit is cool, we know it isn't for everyone. Purchase our freshly picked apples directly in our store in peck or half peck bags. Apple varieties ripen at different times, please check our social media and/or website to see what varieties are currently available.

U-Pick

U-Pick is simple, you pick your own fruit!  It is a perfect fall activity for all ages. If you are enjoying lunch with us just let your server know you would like to purchase a bag for U-pick apples and they can add it to your check and bring the bag directly to your table.  Otherwise, you can purchase directly from the cashier in the front of the restaurant.  Wagons are available upon request!

U-Pick Tips

  • If you want a specific variety of apple, be sure to check on the current varieties we have available.

  • A map will be provided to show you which trees are ready for picking.

  • To correctly pick an apple, use an upward twisting method and apply slight pressure with the palm of your hand instead of pulling. Be careful not to grab the apple too firmly to avoid bruising.

  • Take your time to assess the apple before picking.

  • Most importantly, have fun!

Storing Apples

Apples are climacteric fruits, which is basically just a fancy way of saying they continue to ripen after being picked.  After being harvested, apples begin to produce a hormone called ethylene which is known to speed up the ripening process. With proper storage techniques you can slow down the ripening process, extending the shelf-life of your favorite fall apple!

  • The key to extending storing apples is to keep them cold and to maintain the right humidity with proper ventilation.

  • Ideal storage temperature is 32-39° Fahrenheit, depending on variety.

  • Apples lose some moisture over time while in storage. Store apples in a poly bag with a dampened cloth or paper towel to retain moisture.

  • Ventilation is important when storing apples at warmer temperatures. Ventilation allows the ethylene gas produced by apples to escape.

These general guidelines can help extend the life of your fruit. To find specifics on each of our varieties, visit University of Minnesota’s Agricultural Experiment Station.
